Perseid Meteor Shower at Squaw Valley

August 13 - 14, 2012 (Closed)

OK, Saga North members! Squaw will repeat its totally awesome Perseid Meteor Shower Mountain Campout again on Monday, August 13th! This year, the moon will be new and permit far greater viewing as the "sky falls" on us. Squaw Valley will allow people to camp above Solitude/Shirley Lake and observe the spectacular Perseid Meteor Shower.

Spending the night at 8500 feet on terrain over which you have skied is a real treat. If you've never seen sunrise over Lake Tahoe, or Squaw Peak and Emigrant bright red, this is your chance! The vast fields of summer flowers will astound you.

Although you will make your own reservations with Squaw Valley, please contact Fred, the trip leader, so that we can better organize the group. You make payment with your reservation — the price is $79 with taxes, and includes the Tram ride, professional stargazing instruction, camping, and continental breakfast.

Of course you will need to bring your tent, camping gear, warm clothing, and maybe a lawn chair. Remember, we will be at 8000 feet and it will be cold. Dinner can be purchased at the Poolside Cafe at High Camp, or you can bring your own picnic dinner (not recommended, as this detracts from the mountain elegance of this event, unless you and a friend want to slip away to eat in seclusion). Telescopes will be provided and experts will be available to answer camper's questions. At 7:30 am, everyone will be treated to a continental breakfast at High Camp.

If you are not looking forward to high mountain camping and cold temperatures, and are thinking about other overnight accomodations, you need to realize that camping on Monday night is a must. The final tram leaves at 7:00 pm, and you will not be able to leave until the Tram starts again at 8:00 am Tuesday morning. This is a complete package. There is no way to modify it; Fred says that having done this before, he cannot see why you would want to. The meteor bombardment goes on all night, and is a very special experience. Some campers bring lawn chairs (which Fred recommends) so they can lie on them through the night to enjoy the heavens in comfort with a blanket. While this is "camping", we are on a grassy lawn and you have access to the rest rooms in the High Camp complex — this is upscale camping. You will be on the mountain at times it is not normally accessible.

If you have never seen the sun rise over Lake Tahoe, you will be humbled. Squaw Peak and Emigrant turn brilliant scarlet at dawn — you cannot see that at lake level. You can stay elsewhere on the nights before or after the event if you want to extend the trip (contact Fred for info), but camping on Monday night is the only way to do this.

Logistics

First, Call 1-800-403-0206 (Squaw Valley), then press 0 and ask for Meteor Camping reservations. (It is not necessary to associate your reservation with Saga North.) Please do this ASAP since the event fills up fast.

Second, send an email to RSVP with your trip leader Fred Schein, to let him know you will be joining the Saga North group, and indicate your interest in car pooling. Use this address:
(address has expired) .

On Monday, August 13th, arrive at Squaw Valley, park in the large lot we use for skiing (it's free), and pick up your tickets in the Tram office. You also have the option to drive up and stay at Tahoe Sunday night.

Saga North members meet at the base of the Aerial Tram at 5:00 pm. You can arrive as late as 6:15 pm, but that will limit the time you have to enjoy the spectacular sunset ambience. Once members of the group have arrived, we will all head up together on the Tram, then select and pitch our campsites. We must be on time; the Tram stops running at 6:30 pm.

Optional Day Hike

Optionally, we may hike around Squaw Valley Tuesday morning before riding the Tram down and returning home. Check this link for more information:
