Elkhorn Slough Kayaking

September 10, 2011 (Closed)

Andy Radowick, Saga North member and experienced kayaker, will lead a group of Saga North members on a kayak tour of the wonderful Elkhorn Slough. Elkhorn Slough is at Moss Landing between Monterey and Santa Cruz and offers extensive wildlife observation. Andy has recommended Elkhorn because it is good for both beginners and more experienced kayakers. Elkhorn is a very special place. While you don't need to be an expert kayaker, you do need to be a good swimmer.

This will basically be a one-day event — 6-7 hours, exclusive of travel to and from Moss Landing and "after paddle activites", but we may optionally arrange for some to stay overnight Friday and/or Saturday nights.

All costs will be paid directly to the Monterey Bay Kayaks company and other providers; Saga North will not collect money for this. We only ask members to pre-pay for their kayaks before sending their RSVP to Andy.

Schedule

  • Friday Night
    • May arrange optional lodging to stay overnight
  • 9:00am (please be early)
    • meet at Monterey Bay Kayaks in Moss Landing

    • Andy will provide instructions

    • return to Monterey Bay Kayaks
    • optional: after-paddle — late-lunch / happy-hour / hang-out
  • Saturday Night
    • May arrange optionaL lodging to stay through Saturday

Logistics

Make a reservation for an "open deck" kayak in advance for Saturday, September 10th by calling Monterey Bay Kayaks at (800) 649-5357. Pre-pay the rental fee to guarantee a kayak will be available. Full refunds are allowed up to 72 hours before the date of rental (Tuesday, Sept. 6).

Let Andy know you have a reservation by emailing . Those who want a pre-event familiarization and training session should arrange a separate time for that with Andy, likely in Sausalito.

What to bring: On Saturday, September 10th, we recommend you eat breakfast a bit late since we will not eat until our kayaking is done after 3 PM. You should bring 1-2 bottles of water for drinking and consider 1-2 small snacks such as energy bars. Bring a bathing suit, quick drying clothing, water shoes, hat, and sunblock.

Directions to Monterey Bay Kayaks are on this page: Monterey Bay Kayaks: Elkhorn Slough/, or use our Google Map link below. Use the $5 parking, since we will be out too long for the $3 parking.

Meet at Monterey Bay Kayaks before 9:00am to rent your kayak. Rental includes optional wetsuit, paddling pants and jacket, as well as a lifejacket. Rentals also include an orientation to the Reserve with weather and tidal info. After you sign the release form, Andy will provide instructions for all participants.

We will then enjoy nature and our own company as Andy leads the group through the Elkhorn Slough and back.

After we return our boats, all participants are invited to remain for a Saga North "after paddle" event i.e., "happy hour / late lunch / hang-out".

Members may choose to stay overnight in Monterey or Santa Cruz Friday and/or Saturday. As we get commitments, we will attempt to coordinate lodging so that members staying overnight can be together.
