Utah: Ogden

Snowbasin, Powder Mountain
February 20 - 24, 2010 (Closed)

Midday in the Snowgarden of Eden

John Steinbeck and James Dean may have engrained an image of East of Eden. But how about skiing in an Eden itself, and staying just a short distance southwest of Eden in a luxury hotel with numerous amenities and local restaurants and entertainment within a two-block walk?

This Winter, join fellow Saga North members in our first trip ever to combine two undiscovered ski area gems in northern Utah -- Snowbasin (site of the 2002 Winter Olympics downhill events) and Powder Mountain. Powder Mountain is located within 6 miles of Eden, Utah in the northern Wasatch front of the Rockies. Snowbasin is several miles southwest of there in the town of Huntsville near the Pineview Reservoir.

Most of us already know about Snowbasin: over 3,300 skiable acres, almost 3,000ft vertical, 2 gondolas, 1 tram, numerous high-speed express quads, three of the most incredible base and summit lodges and restaurants on the continent, and annual average snowfall exceeding 400". Looking for a challenge? Try the Men's or Women's Olympic downhill runs. If you can't find it there, you won't find it anywhere.

Powder Mountain is another unsung hero. First, over 5,500 skiable acres making it the largest ski area in the state of Utah. Over 3,000 of those acres is a traditional lift-served resort (for comparison, Alta has 2,200 acres). Then for powder hounds, there is another 1,200 acres accessed by the Powder Country surface shuttle. Then there is another 800 acres accessed by the Lightning Ridge snowcats (there's a $15 surcharge for that). Anyone who needs more of an adrenalin kick will also find additional slopes reserved for heliskiing and the new sport of snowkiting.

Our host hotel will be the Marriott Hotel in downtown Ogden. All rooms will be double occupancy with two queen beds in each room. Full breakfast is included each morning. Depending on whether you like to make first tracks or sleep late, each morning there will be three departures to Snowbasin and two departures to Powder Mountain.

When we return to our comfortable lodgings at the end of the exciting day, we have the historic 25th Street area of Ogden just a few steps from the hotel's south entrance, with a collection of good restaurants. Still have energy to burn? Then head northeast less than 3 blocks to the new Salomon Center, where you will find a Gold's Gym -- which includes a lap swimming pool, running track and racquet ball courts, and of course admission is free with a travel card if you're a Gold's member --, a large modern billiard parlor, an indoor skydiving center where you float on a cushion of air, an indoor wave pool to learn how to surf, a bevy of new restaurants, and the new Megaplex 13 cinema complex containing 13 theaters with stadium seating.

We can only take 13 skiers, and at a total cost of only $760, it's going to fill up very quickly. So sign up today if you're interested!

Single occupancy accommodation may be available for a $380 supplement, by prior arrangement only; use the "E-mail the Event Leader" button below for pre-approval.
