Trail Description:

Start on Northridge Trail with a steep climb past youthful coast live oak and windswept Monterey pines (native to Point Lobos). Look past native toyon to watch the sailboats cruising the bay. Go left onto Perimeter Trail at 0.3 mile. It is mostly paved and flat and eventually comes to entirely landscaped North Garrison at 1.2 miles, where tall cedars and eucalyptus trees thrive. Next, observe the three-story-high hospital where U.S. military men were treated for tropical diseases. A spur trail heads to wind protected Quarry Beach at 1.8 miles.

The ensuing 1.5 miles of Angel Island s south face have been cleared of eucalyptus stands to encourage the growth of native chaparral (toyon, chamise, coyote brush, and manzanita) and native trees (oaks and madrones). Photogenic wide-open views of Alcatraz Island and San Francisco result.

At 4 miles, Sunset Trail takes off from a spot towering over the choppy waters of windy Perles Beach and climbs relentlessly some 500 feet in elevation past coastal scrub and chaparral to 781-foot-tall Mount Livermore . Picnic tables have replaced the Nike missile installation that once stood here.

Retrace your steps and continue north on Perimeter Trail, soon entering a shady grove of mature pines, oaks, and cypresses. At 6.1 miles, look at the classic military buildings comprising West Garrison from the trail or choose to visit them. The chapel, brick hospital, stables, and barracks are still standing.
